Greg Hales, President
Greg Hales Cleaning Systems
My dad, Greg Hales, has loved us four-leggers ever since he was a kid growing up here in Phoenix. He adopted me, Gunner (an English Springer Spaniel), and my sister, Lexus (a Papillon), in August of 2005, and he recently adopted one-year-old Chica Marie (a Deer Chihuahua), who desperately needed a home. Greg owns his own cleaning business, which he started in 1982, and he also works on other community charities, like the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS and Child’s Crisis Nursery. But even with his busy schedule doing those things, he still has time to play with us, take us regularly to the dog park, and even pick up our friends to join our playtime.
When Greg joined Friends of Animal Care & Control in 2005, he told us how important this organization is to saving the lives of animals who otherwise might have to be put to sleep. He is very involved in FACCs, serving on the Fundraising/Marketing committee and the Thrift Store committee, and now he is the new president! We are really proud of him, and we also appreciate that he has given us a safe and loving home. We hope that all the animals he works so hard to save will also find the same.
Gretchen Roberts, Vice President
My person, Gretchen Roberts, joined the FACCs board in 2005, after she heard that MCACC was planning to build a new shelter. She felt strongly that the old one needed to be replaced, and she wanted to help. In fact, I was adopted from the old shelter in 1997, and told her there was certainly room for improvement.
Gretchen is a writer and helps out on the FACCs Marketing Committee as well as on MCACC’s newsletter. She also wrote and recently produced public service announcements for adopting pets from shelters, and for spaying and neutering your pets. (I even star in one of them!)
Before we moved back to Phoenix, we lived in Washington, DC, where Gretchen worked with former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger on his autobiography. Since we were neighbors too, sometimes he would go for walks with us or play ball with me. He was really nice and loved dogs (especially me, of course).
But as fun as that was, Gretchen says the most rewarding thing she’s ever done is volunteer at the shelter, taking pictures of the adoptable pets for MCACC’s website. She says the animals seemed to relish the one-on-one attention, and they always warmed her heart too. Written by Maggie Roberts.
Colleen Carr, Treasurer
My person, Colleen Carr, is very good with numbers. I guess that’s why she’s the Treasurer of Friends of Animal Care & Control. She is a CPA with more than 20 years of experience in accounting and finance, in industries like real estate development, construction, and property management. She has been the Chief Financial Officer of several companies in those areas, and has consulted for lots of small businesses throughout her career. She got her accounting degree at Arizona State University in 1980 and graduated Summa Cum Laude. (I don’t know what that means, but I know she’s really smart!)
Before that, Colleen served in the US Army Military Police, and is a Vietnam veteran. That might make you think that she’s mean and tough, but she is really very sweet and helps out lots of animals like me, volunteering and fostering for Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, Gabriel’s Angels and Rottweiler Rescue. In fact, one time, when she volunteered on MCACC’s adoption bus, I was the last one left, so she adopted me! When we got to her house, that’s where I met my new sister, Pidgey, whom she had fostered and then adopted from the Rottie rescue. Pidgey follows Colleen everywhere, but I always need to patrol the house and yard, and make sure my whole family is safe (even the cats). But my favorite thing to do is go hiking on South Mountain to look for lizards. Pidgey and I both love to swim as well – we even have our own life vests and everything! Written by Basil Carr.
Cheryl Naumann, Member at Large
Apollo Group/University of Phoenix
Hi, I’m Mollie, and I must be the luckiest dog in the world, because when I was lost on the streets of south Phoenix, the nicest lady rescued me! Even though I’m deaf, I could tell right away that she loved me and would take really good care of me. And no wonder! - Cheryl Naumann was president and CEO of the Arizona Humane Society, one of the nation’s largest humane organizations, for more than five years. Plus, she’s been on lots of committees that help animals, like Governor Napolitano’s Companion Animal Spay/Neuter Committee, the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators, and American Humane
Association’s National Animal Protection Advisory Committee. And just last year, she and her husband Roger opened Second Home Pet Resort, a beautiful hotel for pets that has big rooms, indoor and outdoor play areas, and staff on site around the clock. (That was my idea because some of us get a little nervous and lonely when we’re away from home).
Cheryl is not only really good at taking care of animals, but people too. For more than twenty years she has been a human resources executive, currently serving as the Vice President of Human Resources for the Apollo Group/University of Phoenix, and previously as Vice President of Human Resources for a local Fortune 200 company called Avnet; as the Vice President of Human Resources for the Phoenix Suns/Arizona Diamondbacks; and as a human resources executive with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts.
But her main passion has always been animals. I’m glad Cheryl is on the FACCs board now, because they’re doing lots of good things for animals too. But as busy as she is, she always finds time to hang out with me and my other dog, cat and bird siblings. It’s especially great that she takes time to play with me because the others think I’m too silly and rambunctious!
Ann Siner, President Emeritus
My Sister's Closet
Hi, I'm Rico. Weighing in at 100 pounds, I am a gentle giant, and the king of Ann Siner's castle. Ann is the best person a dog could have - and that a cat could have, for that matter. Animals are her #1 passion, and she doesn't just talk the talk, she walks the walk. I have several four-legged adopted "siblings," and get to help raise the dozens of kittens and puppies that Ann fosters here at our home every year.
When she's not taking care of all of us, she has volunteered for HALO (Helping Animals Live On), served a President of the Board for AAWL (Arizona Animal Welfare League) for three years, and is now on the Board of FACCs as its immediate past President. She is a tireless advocate of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control's spay/neuter voucher program, which she and MCACC director Rodrigo Silva created almost three years ago.
I don't know how she finds time, but she also owns and runs 11 very successful designer consignment stores in the Phoenix area. She and her sister opened the first My Sister's Closet in 1991, and the business has expanded into additional MSC stores, as well as My Sister's Attic, which sells recycled furniture; Well-Suited, which carries men's designer clothing; and Small Change, a boutique with all kinds of kids' stuff.
But before all that, when Ann started her professional career, she worked, not surprisingly, in an animal-related field. She climbed the ladder at PetSmart, eventually becoming their Director of Advertising and then Director of Professional Services.
I am very proud of Ann and marvel at how she can do so many things at once. But I love her mostly because she loves me and all my furry friends, and would do anything and everything to help animals.
Joelle Hadley
The Culture Coaches
Greetngs from Casa Hadley. We are Joelle Hadley's (aka the Culture Coach) kids. That big guy you're lookin' at is Rocketman, a Greyhound ... or maybe it's a GREAThound according to my mom, Joelle. He is the second Greyhound she rescued from a tough life of racing. He doesn't run much anymore but loves
going on walks in the mountain preserve of the Dreamy Draw, where we live. And, of course, we all know that it's us dogs and cats that really taught Joelle those yoga moves that she does all the time (downward dog, arches and curls, cat-cow and Shava'asna or corpse pose ... or is it couch potato pose?). It seems like she is always heading to the Village Club, Pilates, yoga or spin class.
That white beauty queen you see is Asia. Joelle met her at a fundraiser for Chyrsalis Domestic Violence Shelters where she served on the board for many years. All the money she paid for me went back to the shelter. Being involved in the community is something Joelle feels strongly about. Joelle has served on many community boards and has been involved in professional groups throughout her career including: The Fresh Start Women's Foundation, National Bank of Arizona Women's Financial Group, Society for Human Resources, American Cancer Society, Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, Greater Phoenix Leadership and The Advertising Club.
By the way, that handsome old feline fella you see is me, Grayboy. I'm usually walking around with my lion haircut like the king of the jungle with a Buddha attitude. I too was a stray after my owner died and went to heaven. Our mom, Joelle Hadley, brings home the bacon (and other treats) by teaching people to play nice together in their sandboxes at work and teaching bosses how to get employees to do good things. She is the president of The Culture Coaches, an executive and corporate training company she founded. Our mom holds a Journalism degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Joelle was Publisher and President of the Phoenix Business Journal, did local television and radio news reports in the Valley and spent a few years before that leading teams in media and advertising sales. She loves her work and loves her life ... with US of course!
Andrea Kalmanovitz
Alchemy PR and Marketing
My mom, Andrea Kalmanovitz, is very special to me. I'm pretty codependent and follow her around everywhere! Athough I'm a hundred pound big boy, truly I'm just a loveable teddy bear that likes to cuddle. When I'm not shadowing Andrea, I play with my sister, Honey, a little white kitty with beautiful gray lining. Andrea adopted Honey without even meeting her, simply because she heard she was otherwise on her way to a shelter. Thank goodness because Honey is my best friend.
When Andrea and I are not swimming and playing fetch, she is hard at work for the company she co-founded, Alchemy PR and Marketing. She works on public relations initiatives including grassroots public affairs, issues management, traditional media relations and social media campaigns. Prior to Alchemy, Andrea began her career in public affairs with the number one ranked non-publicly traded boutique agency in Southern California. Andrea earned awards for clients ranging from non-profit organizations to Fortune 500 companies like the "2005 PRSA PRISM Award for Harrah's Entertainment Inc.'s Crisis Communication Campaign" and the "2003 PRSA's PRISM Award for D.R. Horton's Community Relations Campaign."
Actively participating in the local community's future and vision, Andrea also volunteers for Mayor Phil Gordon's Phoenix Global Trade Initiatives, sits on the Communications Committee for the Arizona Multi-Housing Association and loves being on the Board of Directors for Friends of Animal Care & Control. Before I was born, Andrea graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and an emphasis in interpersonal communications. I appreciate her great communication skills becauseI always know how much she loves me.
Andrea Katsenes
Cox Communications
Let me introduce my “roommate” Andrea Katsenes who is on the Friends of Animal Care and Control (FACCS) board of directors.
I am her favorite – o.k. only Weimaraner. I found myself homeless at the Maricopa County shelter four years ago, when Andrea came down, picked me, adopted me, and had me spayed. We have been inseparable ever since (now you know why they call my breed the “gray ghost”).
Everyday, Andrea goes to Cox Communications, where she is the Director of Media Relations. She is responsible for media and public relations surrounding Cox products and services in Arizona. I like this job because I get free cable – all the “Animal Planet” a dog could want!
A native of Arizona, Andrea returned to the Valley after working in Chicago for Edelman Public Relations Worldwide.
Back when she was a pup, just out of the University of Southern California, Andrea began her career in Washington, D.C., working for two Arizona Congressmen on Capitol Hill. She returned to Arizona to join Governor Fife Symington’s staff as Special Assistant for Special Projects. Continuing her service to the Governor, she was later appointed Director of Communications for the Arizona Lottery.
The rule in our house is to keep your eyes open and see how you can help others. In addition to being committed to the FACCS board, Andrea also a member of the Arizona Heart Ball Committee, Charter 100 and is a Commissioner on the City of Phoenix’s Planning and Zoning Board. I myself am the nice dog that welcomes the many foster pups that come to our house. O.k. I am not always so wecoming, but I try.
Nancy Mitchell
Public Radio Partners
Dog lovers, you have met your match in my mom Nancy Mitchell. I am the newest member of the Mithell household and boy am I lucky! As a rule, my family only adopts animals from shelters or lost animals who need to find a place to call home as fast as possible. I was running around on 7th Avenue and Camelback, starved for food and love. Some nice people took me in and gave me water and food. Unfortunately, they had two dogs, so after a few days I was on my way to the animal shleter. Thank goodness Andrea Katsenes knew the people who were taking me ... so she called my mom and I was rescued that weekend!
My brother Scooter was also a stray, fortunate enough to cross paths with my mom eight years ago. We are so lucky she took us in ... she is really busy but always makes time to walk us, take us to the dog park, scratch our bellies and take us to the vet when we aren't feeling well. We are so lucky bcause I was spayed and Scooter was neutered right away ... just to be sure we didn't get into trouble and bring more dogs into the world.
Nancy is in media sales, she worksfor Public Radio Partners and manages the Corporate Underwriting Sales team for KJZZ and KBAQ in Phoenix. She has lived here for more than 20 years and enjoys volunteering and serving on a variety of local non-profit boards. She is really looking forward to raising funds for animals through the Friends of Animal Care and Control board and making a difference to animals and families in our community.
Our mission is to end euthanasia of healthy and adoptable dogs and cats in our community by raising funds to support the special programs of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control.
